Faded copies: Reduplication as distribution of activity

چکیده
This paper proposes a new theory of reduplication that is based on redefining phonological copying as distribution underlying activity within the framework Gradient Symbolic Representations (Smolensky & Goldrick 2016). assumption correctly predicts copied elements are more likely to undergo reduction and in non-copying context implies but not vice versa. These predictions summarized empirical generalization ‘Copying-Weakening-Implication’. It illustrated with case studies two language types show different thresholds for reduction: languages can only material or twice. Another important result proposal fact symmetrically weakens all involved does single out ‘reduplicant’ best target processes. prediction an difference accounts BR-faithfulness (McCarthy Prince 1995).

Discontiguous Reduplication
McCarthy& Prince () outline a theory of reduplication in which segments in the reduplicant stand in correspondence with segments in the base. Discontiguous partial reduplication patterns, in which a string of segments in the reduplicant corresponds with a discontiguous string of segments in the base, have been observed in various languages in the Austronesian and Austroasiatic language fami...
متن کاملCoding of faded scene transitions
Coding of a scene transition is often a challenging problem, from compression efficiency point of view, because motion compensation may not be a powerful enough method to represent changes between pictures in the transition. This paper proposes a overlay coding technique for coding faded scene transitions. As shown by extensive simulations, over 50% bit-rate savings in both cross-fades and thro...
